The Department of Bioresources Engineering conducts education and research in the fields of bioresources engineering, environmental science, microbiology and food engineering based on the principle of contributing to the development of Okinawa's economic and industrial sectors through education and research in bioresources engineering.

Okinawa Prefecture is blessed with a unique marine environment. It is the only prefecture in Japan that belongs to a subtropical zone and marine characteristics, and is a treasure trove of useful organisms, both from the land and the sea, many of which have not yet been utilized. The Department aims to nurture young practical engineers who can research and utilize these useful organisms to develop products, and train them to be able to process, commercialize, and industrialize biological resources, including subtropical resources by taking advantage of Okinawa's characteristics. Our goal is to train practical human resources with initiative, applied skills and creativity.

To this end, the specialized courses in the professional education program are composed of three pillars: (1) Biochemical Engineering, (2) Environmental and Microbial Engineering, and (3) Food Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Specialized courses are characterized by an emphasis on organic relationships among disciplines and connecting theory with practice, while avoiding re-differentiation into individual academic fields and teaching methods. In addition, all specialized courses combine lectures with experiments and practical training, with emphasis on nurturing creativity, initiative, and practical skills.
